Citizens Holding Company Reports Earnings

PHILADELPHIA, Miss.--()--Citizens Holding Company (NASDAQ: CIZN) announced today results of operations for the three and nine months ended September 30, 2015.

Net income for the three months ended September 30, 2015 was $1.837 million, or $0.38 per share-basic and diluted, down from $1.899 million, or $0.39 per share-basic and diluted for the same quarter in 2014. Net interest income for the third quarter of 2015, after the provision for loan losses, was $6.882 million, approximately 0.2% higher than the same period in 2014, due to a decrease in the provision for loan losses offset partially by a slight decrease in net interest income. The provision for loan losses for the three months ended September 30, 2015 was $142 thousand compared to $205 thousand for the same period in 2014. The decrease in the provision reflects management’s estimate of inherent losses in the loan portfolio including the impact of current local and national economic conditions. The net interest margin decreased to 3.34% in the third quarter of 2015 from 3.62% in the same period in 2014 primarily because of the decrease in yields on earning assets was greater than the decline in rates paid on interest bearing deposits.

Non-interest income decreased in the third quarter of 2015 by $39 thousand, or 1.9%, while non-interest expenses increased $36 thousand, or 0.6%, compared to the same period in 2014. The decrease in non-interest income was due to decreases in service charge income, mortgage loan origination income and other income. Non-interest expense increased primarily due to an increase in salary and benefit expense partially offset by decreases in occupancy expense and other operating expenses.

Net income for the nine months ended September 30, 2015 decreased 9.1% to $5.259 million, or $1.08 per share-basic and diluted, from $5.788 million, or $1.19 per share-basic and diluted, for the nine months ended September 30, 2014. Net interest income for the nine months ended September 30, 2015, after the provision for loan losses, decreased 0.8% to $20.531 million from $20.702 million for the same period in 2014. Net interest margin for the nine months ended September 30, 2015, decreased to 3.38% in 2015 from 3.65% in the same period in 2014. The provision for loan losses for the nine months ended September 30, 2015 was $408 thousand compared to the provision of $778 thousand in 2014. The decrease in the provision reflects management’s assessment of inherent losses in the loan portfolio including the impact caused by current local and national economic conditions.

Non-interest income decreased by $702 thousand, or 11.1%, and non-interest expense decreased by $571 thousand, or 2.9%, for the nine months ended September 30, 2015 when compared to the same period in 2014. The decrease in non-interest income was due primarily to net proceeds of $557 thousand from bank owned life insurance policies that were received in 2014 as a result of the death of an insured bank officer. Non-interest expense decreased primarily due to decreased losses on other real estate, a decrease in loan related collection expenses and a decrease in office supply costs.

Total assets as of September 30, 2015 increased to $960.895 million, up $39.834 million, or 4.3%, when compared to December 31, 2014. Deposits increased by $52.548 million, or 7.5%, and loans, net of unearned income, increased by $40.985 million, or 10.5%, when compared to December 31, 2014. The increase in loans, net of unearned income, was due to improved loan demand. Non-performing assets increased by $2.033 million to $18.820 million at September 30, 2015 as compared to December 31, 2014, because of an increase in non-accrual loans offset partially by decreases in loans 90 days or more past due and still accruing interest and other real estate owned.

During the first nine months of 2015, the Company paid dividends totaling $0.69 per share.
